An old water filter, just like an old air filter, can get clogged. When this happens, water flow slows down significantly because all water must flow through the filter. This is supposed to keep your family safe, drinking only filtered water and using only filtered-water ice. But if the water filter is clogged, you may see a stoppage in the waterline and in ice production. A quick change-out of your water filter should be all you need to make it right.
But you might want to reset the filter light and the ice maker once everything is correct and ready to go. You must be logged in to post a comment. March 19, Refrigerator Repair. They did check the psi the last time they were here. It was fine. Is there a way to post a photo to this thread? I have a Whirlpool double door with unit on front of freezer door. Its about 10 years old.
Recently it started freezing up around bottom edges of ice bucket, forcing it up, resulting in it spilling a bucket of ice onto floor when door was opened.. The problem appears to be two fold. Using Crushed Ice allows very small pieces of ice to melt in a few seconds and get under bucket, building up quickly, pushing bucket up and out of its holder. The other culprit is the extreme relative humidity of the coastal south, which causes condensation almost immediately once door is open.
It then trickles down and freezes under the bucket. The "Quick Fix" is to discontinue use of crushed ice feature and use only the cubed feature. My wife told me this. For the ice machine to run properly again, the underlying problem needs to be fixed to avoid future freeze ups.
Here are a couple of common problems to look at first to help identify the cause of your ice maker freezing up. If you see build up in your ice maker, it may be scale caused by hard water which is common in many Kansas and Missouri areas. Calcium and magnesium bind together and stick to surfaces where water flows continuously.
Ice makers push water over a freezing evaporator plate to form ice. As the water flows it begins freezing little by little to the evaporator plate until it forms a cube. Once the ice grows big enough, the ice is harvested by flowing warmer water over the evaporator plate. Hot gas from the ice-making process is also used to help the ice release and drop into the ice bin below.
When the evaporator plate is covered in scale, ice has a really hard time releasing off the plate. If the ice cube is stuck on the evaporator plate throughout multiple freeze cycles, that one cube will grow into a big piece of ice that can damage the machine. An ice maker freezing up and scale may not seem connected, but if the machine is not kept clean, it can cause issues. The best way to prevent scale build-up is to get professional routine cleanings. A water softener or phosphate filter can help reduce the amount of scale in your machine if you live in an area with hard water, like Topeka or Kansas City.
