I really liked the way fire worked in farcry2, they did a really good job on it. There, players enter buy and sell orders within certain price limits , and the system matches them anonymously.
They did, however, have to code in trading restrictions based on the calculated market value of items Puzzle Pirates has a great system for allowing players to exchange Pieces of Eight the in-game currency for Doubloons the purchased currency. It works kind of like what Indy said: people put in buy and sell orders and the system matches them up. It's fairly anonymous, and players can see the five most favorable offers in each category Po8 for Doubloons and vice versa.
If you want an exchange right now you know what to bid, but if you want to take a longer term view, you can put in an order that you think is better deal. Doesn't seem like it should be rocket science here Brian beat me to it.
They have also added some cs items to boss drops as a very rare drop. To me the most appealing cs items are perma mounts and gems that upgrade items. Still haven't bought any diamonds yet Kind of wish I bought them when on sale the day before launch. But I think what it comes down to is server. On PVE, cs is nice, but not that big a deal. On PVP, anything that makes you stronger is a must, plus you can lock items that stop you loosing them on PK death. On PvE Govinda, for me , you just need to transmute your gear the old fashioned way.
